Little Britain
Joss Stone has joined a campaign to officially have a neighborhood city’s Greenwich Village designated as Little Britain.
Officially recognizing cultural communities throughout the boroughs has been a constant in New York City for decades, with Manhattan now boasting such neighborhoods as Little Italy, Chinatown, Spanish Harlem, Little Brazil, and Koreatown. But despite the number of British residents in New York City, and the large number of travelers between here and the United Kingdom, there is no Little Britain.
The Campaign For Little Britain was started by a group of British residents and businesses located in the vicinity of Greenwich Avenue and West 12th Street. Led by Tea & Sympathy, the British restaurant on Greenwich Avenue, and Virgin Atlantic, the campaign is petitioning New York City to formally recognize Little Britain as a new neighborhood in Manhattan.
A host of celebrities - including Kate Winslet, Billy Connolly, Sir Richard Branson, Mike Myers, Jools Holland, and Kiefer Sutherland - have backed a campaign to officially have a neighborhood of the city’s Greenwich Village designated as Little Britain.
Joss Stone said: “Britain is a wicked place full of culture and great people. So why not bring a Little Britain to New York?”
The campaign has met opposition with the New York Government, but the campaigners aren’t giving up and hope to talk directly to Gov. Bloomberg.
