Fashion Rocks UK

Friday, October 19th, 2007

jossredcarpet.jpgJoss appeared yesterday at the Swarovski Fashion Rocks at the Royal Albert Hall in London. The benefit raised money for the Prince’s Trust, which aims to help young people who are labeled “hoodies” for not having jobs, education or training. The show paired fashion designers with celebrities. Joss was paired with Calvin Klein.

Joss looked very elegant on the red carpet with her hair up in a bun and very simple make up and jewelry. She wore a pink dress that is much more form fitting then her usual choice of dresses. She wore strappy sandles, that I am sure she took off once she had the chance.

Joss also performed at the show and once I am able to find a video of this, I will post.

Joss takes flack from press

Friday, October 19th, 2007

Joss has made a decision to represent herself after a string of bad luck with managers.

Last week Joss came out and said “”I’m never having a manager ever again. I’ve had four in the past five years and I hate them all.”

Since then there has been backlash from some of the former managers and as well as the press. Multiple articles have called her a brat and “Mariah Carey wannabee”

In an article in the dailymail former manager Ron Stone states

“If she’s not careful she could derail her career. Joss wants to manage herself but you have to consider her lack of understanding of the challenges in front of her. There’s no way she can make the sophisticated choices demanded because her life experience is so very limited.”

Later on in the article Ron Stone(no relation to Joss) calls Joss a Mariah wannabe. ”

The article continues on with more conversations from different managers.

I really hope Joss is able to overcome all of this bad publicity. She is not the first person to go through multiple managers. Hopefully she will figure things out and get back on track. I think a lot of criticism comes from the fact that she is so young and making these decisions on her own.

Wednesday, September 19th, 2007

Joss has gotten together with record executive and Kimora Lee Simmons to launch the Women in Entertainment Empowerment Network (WEEN).

Led by women executives in music, television, film, radio and other forms of entertainment, WEEN is dedicated to supporting, promoting and defending the positive, balanced portrayal of women in entertainment and in society.

The coalition, which is comprised of women of all races and ages, was created in light of recent discussion surrounding the portrayal of women of color in entertainment, specifically in Hip-Hop music.

Ryan Shaw to open for Joss

Wednesday, August 15th, 2007

Newcomer Ryan Shaw is scheduled to open for Joss on some of her U.S. tour dates. I had never heard of Ryan, but after visiting his webpage and listening to some of his songs, I think he is a good fit to perform with Joss.
He has a great voice and a soulful vibe. Similar to Joss, his debut album features mostly cover songs. Shaw’s song choices were songs as he puts it were “should have been” hits of the 60’s and 70’s. You can check out a video bio/performance of Shaw below.

Joss to help in Christmas Card contest for Charity

Monday, August 13th, 2007

Joss is helping out with the North Devon Gazette and Amigos charity “Design a Christmas Card” competition. Joss will autograph the cards of the winning artists for them to keep.

Joss is also to switch on the Christmas lights in Barnstaple on November 18. The lighting is the culmination of “Amigos month” with the aim of raising as much money as possible for the local charity. As well as sponsoring the education of more than 100 orphans, the team of North Devon volunteers need to raise 25,000 Euros to complete phase one of a new farm training school in Uganda.
Joss is a big supporter of the Amigos Charity.

Joss is no stranger to the needs of Africa, she sang at last the live8 concert and also on the now famous Christmas number one ‘Do they know it’s Christmas time’. Joss said “I think any group of people putting there lives aside to help others deserves support. Amigos is doing just that and doing a really great job of it. There are so many people living in Africa who are hardly living at all. It just seems so unnecessary.”

Little Britain

Tuesday, July 24th, 2007

Joss Stone has joined a campaign to officially have a neighborhood city’s Greenwich Village designated as Little Britain.

Officially recognizing cultural communities throughout the boroughs has been a constant in New York City for decades, with Manhattan now boasting such neighborhoods as Little Italy, Chinatown, Spanish Harlem, Little Brazil, and Koreatown. But despite the number of British residents in New York City, and the large number of travelers between here and the United Kingdom, there is no Little Britain.

The Campaign For Little Britain was started by a group of British residents and businesses located in the vicinity of Greenwich Avenue and West 12th Street. Led by Tea & Sympathy, the British restaurant on Greenwich Avenue, and Virgin Atlantic, the campaign is petitioning New York City to formally recognize Little Britain as a new neighborhood in Manhattan.

A host of celebrities - including Kate Winslet, Billy Connolly, Sir Richard Branson, Mike Myers, Jools Holland, and Kiefer Sutherland - have backed a campaign to officially have a neighborhood of the city’s Greenwich Village designated as Little Britain.

Joss Stone said: “Britain is a wicked place full of culture and great people. So why not bring a Little Britain to New York?”

The campaign has met opposition with the New York Government, but the campaigners aren’t giving up and hope to talk directly to Gov. Bloomberg.

Journal Entry

Monday, July 16th, 2007

Joss does a journal on her webpage. She hadn’t posted since May, so I was surprised to find that she had posted a new entry.

Here is a portion of it.

I’m now in South Africa after being in Devon for 3 days! nice.

it was beyond lovely to just be home for a bit see my mum and my brothers the eldest is having a baby soon with new wifey, so all is well in sunny England.

I’m in Africa for the live earth concert, it gonna be amazing to watch just from a pure music point of view but also because i think its really gonna help us all. this isn’t a charity that is just direct to a certain group of people this is to save the earth which in turn saves us, because apparently so I’m learning we are the ones killing it . every single last one of us, We don’t have to completely change how we live we just have to be More thoughtful, simple things like turning off the lights when u leave a room , not leaving the tap running, recycling ur rubbish , and hey if you’ve got a spare couple minutes go plant a tree .”

It looks like Joss is going to be an Aunt. How exciting. I bet she will be a fun Aunt. To read the whole entry, visit her webpage
